10. A rowboat

A handmade nine-foot rowboat can cost more than a new personal watercraft. Here are ten levels of boat ownership, from rowboat to superyacht. Number ten: a rowboat. A classic nine-foot rowboat lists at $11,995 before options.

The maker says it rows well with one, two, or three adults aboard. The page says its shape is great for towing behind a larger boat, and it can be hoisted aboard. The boat is nine feet one inch long and weighs 130 pounds. At this level, you row, so your own arms are the engine.

It can be stored outside on a boat dolly, a small trailer or a rack. Oars are a separate choice, and a small outboard can go on the optional motor pad. Maintenance is cleaning and oiling the teak, about three hours a year, the page says. By our count, this rowboat's list price is $4,896 above the next level's starting price.

Prices differ where you live. If this helps, subscribe: every price in this video comes from the makers' own pages, linked below.

9. A personal watercraft

Number nine: a personal watercraft. The Sea-Doo Spark is listed from $7,099. Transport and preparation are not included in that price. The base package carries up to two passengers.

The maker calls it a lightweight and playful platform, able to tow with almost any car. It also has an intelligent brake and reverse system. A three-passenger version starts at $8,699, with a larger rear platform. A convenience package, optional on that version, lists a front storage bin, a boarding step and a variable trim system.

Another model on the same page, the GTI, starts at $12,299. At this level, an engine replaces the oars. By our count, per passenger, the base Spark comes to about $3,550. 7,099 divided by two is about 3,550.

Licensing and age rules differ where you live.

8. A pontoon boat

Number eight: a pontoon boat. Sea-Doo prices the Switch Compact from $24,999, trailer included. As with the Spark, transport and preparation are not in that price. It takes up to five people on board.

The Switch sixteen package, from $29,999, takes up to eight. Its modular deck can be rearranged on the fly, with attachable tiles. The same brake and reverse system helps with docking here too. It lists three driving modes: sport, eco and cruise control.

The Switch Cruise starts at $35,349, also with the trailer in the price. The priciest model on the pontoon page, the Switch Cruise Limited, starts at $51,699. The boat grows from a ride for two or three into a lounge for a group. By our count, the Compact comes to just under $5,000 per person aboard.

24,999 divided by five is just under 5,000. Boating rules differ where you live.

7. A sport boat

Number seven: a sport boat. Yamaha's most affordable jet boat begins at $39,999. That is a starting price, and the page has a separate request for the local price. Sold in the eighteen-foot series, the SX one eighty is seventeen feet six inches long.

It seats six people and tows behind a midsize SUV, the maker says. Its fuel tank holds thirty gallons. Its listed dry weight is 2,150 pounds. A single 1.9 liter Yamaha engine powers its jet drive.

On its trailer, the boat is twenty feet five inches long and six feet two inches tall. It carries up to 1,375 pounds. The eighteen-foot models come with a standard watersports tower. With the tower, towing a tube, skis or a wakeboard becomes part of the day.

By our count, each of its six seats comes to about $6,667. 39,999 divided by six is about 6,667. Towing and trailer rules differ where you live.

6. A twenty-five-foot sport boat

Number six: a twenty-five-foot sport boat. The SX two fifty is listed from $84,999. It is sold in the twenty-five-foot series, but its own length is twenty-four feet six inches. It seats twelve people.

Twin 1.9 liter engines replace the single engine of level seven. The fuel tank grows to seventy-five gallons. A head compartment, a small private toilet space, appears on board at this size. Weight capacity grows to 2,600 pounds.

The page lists 731 gallons of storage. A walk-through bow door and a floating helm with a touchscreen are on its feature list. Twelve seats turn a family boat into a boat for two families. By our count, twice the seats cost about 2.1 times the price of level seven.

84,999 divided by 39,999 is about 2.1. Insurance rules differ where you live. That's halfway: five levels done, from a rowboat up to a twenty-five-foot sport boat. The last five go from a day cruiser up to a superyacht, with the top last.

5. A day cruiser

Number five: a day cruiser. In the twenty-nine-foot series, Yamaha's day cruiser has a starting price of $204,999. Yamaha calls it its first-ever day cruiser and its most refined expression of boating yet. Its own length is twenty-eight feet five inches.

The fuel tank holds 111 gallons. Twin supercharged engines and joystick control come with it. Its seating capacity is listed as yacht certified, not as a number of seats. On the trailer, it stands twelve feet tall and weighs 8,026 pounds.

An aluminum twin-axle trailer is optional. A signature swim platform and a sculpted hardtop are part of the design. The hardtop gives shade, so the boat suits a whole day on the water. By our count, level five costs $120,000 more than level six.

204,999 minus 84,999 is 120,000. Prices and options differ where you live.

4. A cruising yacht

Number four: a cruising yacht. From here up, the makers' pages list no price, only an enquiry form. The Azimut Atlantis forty-five is 14.6 meters long, with two cabins. It sleeps four, with two head compartments.

Twin engines take it up to thirty-five knots, the maker says. Its main deck is flush from stern to bow. Its fuel tank takes 1,000 liters. Fresh water capacity is 350 liters.

Its cruising speed is thirty knots. At full load, it weighs 16.6 tonnes. A chaise lounge flanks the helm, behind a single-piece curved windscreen. Now the boat has cabins, so you can stay aboard overnight.

By our count, at forty-seven feet eleven inches, it is nineteen and a half feet longer than the day cruiser. Mooring costs differ where you live.

3. A flybridge yacht

Number three: a flybridge yacht. Azimut's Fly fifty-three adds a crew cabin to three guest cabins. It sleeps six guests and one crew member. It is 16.78 meters long.

Its weight at full load is 28.9 tonnes. A joystick offers intuitive, one-handed control in every situation, the maker says. When joystick driving is on, the autopilot engages right away. Automated interceptors adjust the trim at every speed.

Its top speed is up to thirty-one knots. Above the main deck sits a multifunctional flybridge, a second open deck with its own view of the sea. The maker builds it in fiberglass, with a planing hull. Two engines of 725 horsepower each drive it, the page lists.

The boat now has room for its own crew, apart from the guests. By our count, it is about two meters longer than level four, but over twelve tonnes heavier. 28.9 minus 16.6 is 12.3. Crew and licensing rules differ where you live.

2. A yacht with a full crew

Number two: a yacht with a full crew. The Azimut Magellano thirty-meter has five guest cabins and three crew cabins. It sleeps ten guests, plus five crew members. The yacht is 29.7 meters long.

It is built to excel in navigation to far-off destinations, the maker says. Fuel capacity is 14,500 liters. Against similar boats with a traditional hull, the maker says it uses at least 20% less fuel. Six guest heads and three crew heads are on board.

It weighs 128 tonnes at full load. Cruising speed is up to sixteen knots, or eighteen with the optional engines. The crew becomes a team, with cabins and heads of its own. By our count, its length is about twice that of level four's yacht.

29.7 divided by 14.6 is about two. Crew costs differ where you live. Before number one, a guess: how much water can a superyacht's pool hold?

1. A superyacht

Number one: a superyacht. One shipyard builds custom steel yachts from fifty to more than 100 meters. On one of its yachts, the sun deck pool can hold up to 21,000 liters of water. By our count, that pool can hold sixty times the fresh water level four's yacht carries.

21,000 divided by 350 is sixty. One of its families pairs steel hulls with aluminum superstructures. Its lengths run from fifty-one and a half to seventy-two meters. Fold-out wings widen the deck, beside an infinity pool.

The yard calls that family the first to offer an authentically sea-immersive experience on yachts of fifty meters and above. Each yacht in that family can run a hybrid system that mixes traditional and electric propulsion. A custom yacht of eighty meters, spread across six decks, is due to launch in 2,028. At the top, each yacht is made to order: the yard says it works one-on-one with each owner.

Rules differ where the yacht sails. So, every level: a rowboat, a personal watercraft, a pontoon boat, a sport boat and a twenty-five-foot sport boat. Then a day cruiser, a cruising yacht, a flybridge yacht, a crewed yacht and a superyacht. Prices, fees and rules differ where you live.

So open the makers' own pages, and see what they list for your area. Which level would you pick? Tell us the number in the comments. Results vary, and this is information only, not financial advice.

Sources and notes

Every level of boat ownership, from a rowboat to a superyacht, counted down from ten to one with the top last: what changes at each level, from price and seats to cabins, crew and fuel. Prices and specifications come from the makers' own pages (Whitehall Rowing & Sail, Sea-Doo, Yamaha Boats, Azimut Yachts and Benetti), read on October 25, 2026, in dollars where the pages list a price; the larger yachts list no price. The counts said as "by our count" are our own arithmetic on those numbers, and prices, fees and rules differ where you live and can change.
